When the Expectations Around you Don’t Always Align With who you are.
Our families, cultures, communities, and relationships shape how we understand ourselves and the world around us. Sometimes those influences provide connection and belonging. Other times, they can create tension especially when your needs, values, or choices don’t seem to fit with what others expect of you.
You may find yourself caught between who you are, who others want you to be, and who you’re becoming. Therapy can provide a space to explore those tensions without having to choose between honoring where you come from and being true to yourself.
When Relationships Become Complicated
You may be navigating:
- difficulty setting boundaries with family
- guilt when making choices for yourself
- pressure to meet family or cultural expectations
- conflict around relationships, marriage, career, or life choices
- feeling responsible for other people’s emotions
- difficulty expressing your needs
- changing roles within your family
- feeling caught between different cultural identities or values
- recurring relationship patterns that leave you feeling misunderstood or disconnected
- wanting closer relationships while also needing more space
Wanting boundaries doesn’t mean you don’t love your family.
And having different values or needs doesn’t mean you are rejecting where you come from. Sometimes the work is learning how to hold both.
The Tension Between Belonging and Being Yourself
Many of us learn early what is expected of us including how to behave, what success looks like, how to care for others, and what emotions or needs are acceptable. These messages can become so familiar that we may follow them automatically, even when they no longer fit who we are.
You may find yourself asking:
“What do I actually want?”
“Am I making this choice because it’s right for me or because I’m afraid of disappointing someone?”
“How can I honor my family without losing myself?”
These questions don’t have simple answers.
Therapy can give you space to explore them without judgment.
Creating Relationships That Feel More Authentic
Together, we can explore the patterns and expectations influencing your relationships, strengthen your ability to communicate your needs, and develop boundaries that feel both healthy and authentic to you. Therapy isn’t about deciding who is right or wrong. It’s about understanding yourself more clearly and finding ways to relate to others that allow you to remain connected without abandoning yourself.
You can Honor Where you Come From While Creating Space for Where You’re Going.
You don’t have to choose between belonging and being yourself.
